We are waiting for you!

What is "Land of Witches" about??

Paradise is a town of whores and drug addicts where, instead of rivers of milk and honey, there is a lake that smells of vomit and urine. Maria Ferreira (Madrid, 1989) she had fantasized as a child about the promised land when she listened to her father tell her stories about Africa. time passed, achieved his dream in Makuyu, a forgotten corner of Kenya where he has spent five years

working, there it goes, caring for psychiatric patients in a hospital. Was not, course, the bucolic place you imagined. There he has become accustomed to kissing death on the lips every morning and stumbling upon shocking stories that he did not even glimpse in his childhood dozes. It is this routine of the unusual that María faces in this book -a naked confession of affection, fears and wonders- with the naturalness of someone who faces the perfect storm with an umbrella.

As the journalist Javier Brandoli assures in the prologue of the work, one of those responsible for VaP, «There are moments in Tierra de Brujas in which you can smell everything and one has to separate something from the pages, breathe and do a memory exercise that consists of remembering the human being». "I've read a few books about Africa and, course, I have never faced a work like this -continues Brandoli-. Perhaps because none of the authors I have read I could tell in the first person what tells Maria. She did not run away from Makuyu, as we would almost all, she stayed there hating and loving that land».

“I am twenty-four years old and in the backseat of my car more men have died than those who have loved me”, the author confesses as she tells us about the ups and downs of a love story, his, sprinkled with black magic spells, fridges where beers share space with dead babies, zombies that don't know they're alive, ghosts that haunt the mind and childless girls who succumb in a latrine. María accommodates her routine to those crazy experiences, that describes us with a simplicity of a surgical precision that is, perhaps, his way of protecting himself against the extraordinary without succumbing to the tyranny of loneliness. Mary's victory is to tell, tell us, and, especially, learn to love that land of witches where, confesses, never felt so alive.

Land of Witches is the third book published by the editorial Journeys to the Past after the compilation of traveling chronicles «The world of luggage» (2014) and «The African Macondo» (2015), by Javier Brandoli. María Ferreira has collaborated with the Viajesalpasado.com website since June 2013.
