Outside the monumental center of Prague there is a hill that is buried in the history of the Czech Republic. A cemetery, a church and gardens filled with exciting legends. A place as beautiful and haunting as the great city that was born at his feet. It all starts with the life of Princess Libuse and pagan prophecy…

t is off the tourist route Prague, Few tourists come here. His walk is slow and deliberate. Surprising landscape of tombs and legends. Vysehrad Hill is a must for the traveler who wants to see the hidden. It is a must for history buffs. It is place of magic and mystery. We only bring a clue to understand the secrecy.

A mythical pagan princess, Libuse, daughter of the father of the Czech nation, Cech, chose a hill on which currency the Vltava River and launched a prophecy that still lingers between earth and heaven of eternal Prague: "Here was born a city whose fame and glory come to the stars". So it was and so the legends Catalogue. But actually, between those rocks, born also one of the most enigmatic and symbolic throughout Europe there. If Prague is a chest of art and history, the hill and Vysehrad Castle is the key to all their secrets. The devil, San Lucas, San Longino, Live a cemetery, 34 counted ghosts, and a thousand legends that are part of the country more deeply rooted tradition. It gets there stopping at the subway stop of the same name: Vysehrad. No more 15 minutes from downtown.

It may be difficult to understand the history of this place without walking its streets and trees, without seeing the black church and its "garden" of graves, but it is the exact decorated wander between two worlds. Libuse, the beginning of this story, marked the site of a fortress that has witnessed power struggles, abode of kings and the scene of bloody battles in which the goal was to ensure control of a strategic stronghold in Czech wars. Death has broken through its walls and has given rise to various legends. They say that in what appears to be the remains of a medieval watchtower, known as the Bath Libuse, where the princess was alternated with their lovers, once used were thrown into the river. They also say that among its rocks sleeps an army of nobles who will rise again to life carrying their weapons when the Czech nation is in danger. Once a year, a lion out of the rock and throws a loud roar as a warning about the need for help. With no response, the animal returns to its eternal sleep with him, the army of noblemen among other, is composed of all those who perished under the enigmatic rock, drowned in the Vltava.

It is the only legend that tells of ghosts in this place. Exactly am 34 the ghosts that dwell strength say. Many Czech writers have written about these stories that are part of the culture of the city. Popelka Biliánova, Czech author, edited a book titled "Tales Vysehrad». No one but she knows the secrets of the hill, because in their free time getting into his graveyard to look and wander among tombs. Its strange character, say, was reflected in their stories.

The devil column

In front of the Church of St. Peter and Paul, en el jardín the Karlach, is split into three pieces known as devil column. (Before he was placed in the temple itself and then in the cemetery that shore). It is a symbol which portrays the war between Christian and pagan. Origin, that is not defined, talk that could be supporting the old church of St. Peter and Paul (S XI y XII), until 1503 within the building collapsed and was as relic. Other theories believe that the column was an old timer or could be a medieval pillory. This explanation fits in with what some historians believe that is the beginning of Vysehrad: to reach the hill Slavs found remains of a Celtic settlement which had a timer built through large columns.

In San Pedro and San Pablo was a painting even more significantly: Our Lady of Rains, it is a work of the fifteenth century. The original picture, set out in the National Gallery and previously was hung on the walls of a church that is under Vysehrad, The Compliance of Our Lady, depicting the Virgin Mary breastfeeding the baby Jesus. His father, the painter, say it is the Apostle Luke. Others give less relevant origin and point to a painting in Italy in the fourteenth century and later brought to Bohemia.

There, death becomes black prose. It does so through a marble garden, in which each grave or niche is a piece of frozen time, an image, a thought

True or not the story of Luke, painting was venerated by thousands of Czechs. After the War 30 years (1648) and in full period catholicization, the people felt that the painting was miraculous. Pilgrims from all Czech Republic came to the church to ask for protection from the Virgin. Especially, the people begging for for rain and good crops would, hence the name. The Emperor Joseph II ended with this tradition after more than a century of worship and forbade the continuation of the miraculous procession.

The sarcophagus and the cemetery

A sarcophagus is preserved under an altar of the imposing church of Vysehrad is another puzzle over this place. The sarcophagus of St. Longinus was brought to Prague by Emperor Charles IV. Others say it comes from non-preserved Roman dome of the last stage of the Premyslian. The fact is that in 1420 Hussites sacked the castle and took the coffin from the temple to throw the Vltava River. They say that the saint's body sank into the depths, while the coffin was floating on the water. Unhappiness and misfortune was the fate of those who committed such barbarity. They did not stop serious mishaps happen to everyone who participated in the outrage until the sarcophagus returned to his place.

But, although the coffin of St. Longinus occupies a special place in the history of Vysehrad, Nothing about this place would be like without your graveyard. There are buried important artists and scientists in the history of the Czech Republic, Václav archaeologist as Krolmus, the writer, Bozena Nemcova, and poets, Vitezslav Halek y Jan Neruda, among others. There died, eg, many Jesuits who treated lepers. There, death becomes black prose. It does so through a marble garden, in which each grave or niche is a piece of frozen time, an image, a thought. Walking around Vysehrad is different. A tall black church in the background; dozens of beautiful and bizarre sculptures symbolizing death to their feet. Two giant hands and twisted, a sort of elf or allegorical unrestrained death and faceless hooded are some of the graves in the cemetery. Amazing place where all the magic of the hill became Fort makes sense.

In terms of aircraft, the offer to go to Prague is varied and good prices are usually last minute internet.

In Prague, you have to take the subway, line C and get off at Vysehrad (is attached to the convention center).

The traveler fell asleep in a cheap hotel and bordering the city center. The Da Vinci in Prague is a good choice for budget.

The Park Inn is a four star hotel next to Vysehrad hill (I got good references for this hotel, but do not know).
