How difficult is to select only four animals of Patagonia! To do, I relied on a number of criteria:

1.I divided the region into three very different habitats: Andean Patagonia, central (steppe) and coastal. Each of these areas must have at least one representative.

2.It must be animals actually the traveler is likely to see. I say this because there are many (especially birds) which are very attractive but extremely hard to find.

3.Contact with tourists and VaP. readers got what animals are those who want to see when traveling to this region of South America. Ie, they are icons of Patagonia.

4.They are attractive not only for its beauty but also for their interesting behavior.

With these guiding principles, without order established, I selected these four animals as the most attractive Patagonian:

Southern Right Whale

Almost 2.000 whales concentrate every year from May to November in Patagonian waters near the Peninsula Valdes. Tourists from around the world flock to the city of Puerto Madryn, thence, move to the town of Punta Piramide and embark in boats and watching these huge marine mammals. Jumping, blows, splashing, all whales do travelers so near. It is impossible not to take unforgettable photos. I spotted whales in various parts of the world, but nowhere is experience as impactful as in Patagonia.

Penguins

In the summer Patagonian penguin hundreds of thousands flock to the beaches to breed and raise their young. Except Penguin Island Puerto Deseado, where lives Rockhopper, on the Atlantic coast the species is found only Magellan, while over the Pacific there Humboldt penguin colonies. Occasionally appears a king penguin on Papua, penguin lost its Atlantic islands (especially Malvinas). Punta Tombo, south of Puerto Madryn, is the typical place watching, but there are many other sites available to the traveler.

Condor

Not difficult to see a condor flying over the ground without moving their wings in the Andean Patagonia. At high altitude, updrafts advantage to regain altitude and continue planning in circles in search of carrion. Their flight is majestic and one can spend hours watching. As I said before, is not difficult to see, how difficult it is to see them close. They nest on high, from where you are dropped to make speed and take flight. One thing for experts: Condors although black is seen from below, the top of its wings are white, so long as one expects some twist sighted in flight to appreciate. Other characteristic features are the "scarf" around his neck white and long feathers from the tip of its wings.

Guanaco

While the guanaco is found in almost all the Patagonia region, its true kingdom is the central steppe. In herds of ten to twenty they can be seen from a distance, but when a vehicle approaches them galloping away without any fencing to retain. Some few are accustomed to human presence, but her natural suspicion that kept them alive for millennia, since the arrival of humans to the region, ago 10.000 years, exterminated most large mammals, guanaco being the only survivor. The ancient paintings of the Cueva de las Manos realize how important it was this animal for the survival of the tribes of the region, those without horses or long-range weapons, should expand their strategies to hunt. They have the first Western travelers it was common to see them in flocks of up 500. Today that is no longer, sheep because they have run from their habitat. But, still live in large numbers and their population is stable. For connoisseurs: the neighing of the dominant male of the group can hear when danger stalks the herd. The male is left to face the challenge giving time to rest fleeing.

There are many animals to see in Patagonia, but these four should be on every traveler's list.
