The ghost of the leopard

Leopard with its two young. South Luangwa, Zambia. Javier Brandoli

The leopard may be the most fascinating animal in the savannah. I don't think it's just because of its beauty as a polished cat, of always camouflaged predator. The leopard is an enigma because it is from all African felines the most difficult to contemplate. My first year in Africa, I told it in this magazine in 2010, I couldn't see one until the last park, Lago Mburo, of that long route between South Africa and Uganda. That made me make the feline a myth. Why are we crazy about the lions, Guepardos The Rhinos? Is a lion more beautiful than an impala or a zebra? It is not, But felines costs a lot to see them, while the zebras and impalas one observes them by thousands. There is no aesthetic taste in that fascination, There is the human universal rule of longing for what you do not have.

And what is least had is the leopard. So that May of 2014 that driving the car by South Luangwa, en Zambia, I was silent before that scene. My friend Vítor, next to me, Nor did he give credit. Mom Leopardo walked from us with her two young. We were alone. They and we. The puppies were running. The mother controlled them, He controlled us. And we smiled. We contemplated a ghost of the savannah. When they disappeared among the bushes we embrace as if we celebrated a goal. So are the safaris in the savannah.
