The refuge of the Mediterranean

February is a strange. We're like in November: both are cold months, sometimes wet, rainy, unkind, no parties that rejoice. Of course we speak of our hemisphere. However, If the memory does not betray me, I think one month is February not too kind to many of the territories of southern Ecuador, because it brings endless rain and heat of oppression.

The Earth is a fanciful scenario where, perhaps, I should be enjoying life in the spring and autumn. As a friend of mine used to say Andalusian, "The cold and work are two circumstances that brutalize and should be avoided".

If I think of places where it is advisable to seek refuge while the winter dies, I think that there is a better, in my opinion, the European Mediterranean. And the reason lies not only in a climate where the thermometer rarely tumble, but among other reasons for the laxity with which it takes time, the beauty of the winter sea and sunsets sky lights wash the fresh air laden.

Look at the dear reader a short list of places to flee Mediterranean to miss this month February. For example, the wild beaches of Cabo de Gata, Almeria, the elegant towns of Denia and Benicasim Levantine, the beautiful corner of Port de la Selva in Costa Brava, and either of Spain, Niza, Sardinia, Palermo, Corfu, Kefalonia, Izmir, and Beirut, looking, yes find the latter city in a season without war, not so simple thing.

But I say it's not just the weather that attracts this geography. The Mediterranean is more benign than light and air; the Mediterranean is a universe in itself, a unique culture among many homelands curd. I feel much more French than English, more Italian than German, Greek rather than Dutch, More and more Turkish Syrian Austrian Czech. If you ask me, I even see first Tunisian or Algerian Belgian or Swiss - how awful!-, and being as I am agnostic, more Catholic than Lutheran, More and more Muslim Jewish Buddhist Calvinist.
The Mediterranean also is a way of seeing the world, a loosely, generally friendly, free emergency, hedonistic and a bit fatalistic. The Mediterranean soul is as skeptical as playful.

Therefore, it has attracted and amazed so many writers in other hemispheres: Durrell, Miller, Rilke, Byron, Keats, Man…, a list would be endless if we reproduce in full.
However, dear reader, if you want to understand this world, I suggest books Fernand Braudel. No one has better understood this universe.
