The nostalgia of the places we do not know

Over the years one coming true, harm than good, mythology that dream and stepping all places that have awakened the nostalgia of the unknown.

In the thinking of most of us there is a corner where they kept our mythologies travelers. I know few people who do not have in your head, or in your heart, an ideal, an imagined homeland. I remember once, traveling on a ferry from the big island Wheels the small Kastellorizon -which it is like a pea on the map of the Aegean, Beyond the East, path Cyprus-, a couple of newlyweds Italian, young, who were with me the only foreign passenger ship. I went to the island for reasons that are irrelevant-casual- and they badly with a longing to visit that content that is not insignificant place in any tourist guide. We chatted a while on the rail, under the hood of a magnificent sunset of pink and orange. What led them to Kastellorizon?, I asked. Simply, a dream. Months before her marriage had been together a film shot on the island that had fascinated, "Mediterranean", and had promised the place to enjoy your honeymoon. And there they were, to spend a few days in a rocky area on the sea where there are no museums or monuments, or even good beaches. I saw them walking in the small town I spent three afternoons in Kasstellorizon and seemed happy with their dream fulfilled. And I reaffirmed my notion that, when traveling, to some extent we do a myth promoted by living within us. I call that "nostalgia for what you don't know.". It is the main driver of my vocation traveling.

Traveling, to some extent we do a myth promoted by living within us

A Over the years I already I have a handful- one will meet that mythology harm than good dream and stepping all places that have awakened the nostalgia of the unknown. But I think very few have reached the degree of emotional intensity that came to put my feet on the island of Ithaca, the home of Ulysses, the patron saint of travelers the world. It is not easy to get to Ithaca, because it lacks even a small airfield. Nor are there many people interested in going there, because, como in Kastellorizon, there are no monuments to visit and good beaches for tourists eager to achicharrarse Nordic sun. The island is only accessible by small ferries, from neighboring Kefalonia and nearby Levkas, or a large boat, a couple of times a week, departs from some distant city of Patras. So only travel to Ithaca to encourage the literary dream since, being a teen, We read for the first time that immense book that is "The Odyssey".

Dimitris Greek classics recited me when I asked him and he took me fishing on a boat that needed immediate dismantling

I've been twice in my life in Ithaca. And do not rule out return once more before I got permanently to a wheelchair. On two occasions I stayed in a pension, "Tsiribis", at one end of the island capital, City Vathy, and finally I became good friends with the owner, Dimitris, I recited the Greek classics when I asked, The beginning of "The Odyssey", and he took me with him fishing on a boat that needed immediate dismantling. Whenever a Spanish comes home, Dimitris invites you to a glass of wine and send me your memories. Since I was there for the second time, in 1998, we have not ever written or spoken by phone. But he is one of my great friends and I of theirs, I am sure.

Ithaca is as briefly describes Homer in his book: «good for goats, bad for horses. Abrupt, rocky, dry, fields hardly, with very little fishing and wine producing tough and rough, Ithaca offers nothing more than literary emotion.

No less.
